Project Information

In collaboration with Gonzaga University’s Placed Based Initiative Project and Gonzaga Preparatory School’s Community Service Program, Gonzaga Family Haven will house 72 families who have experienced homelessness.  These family apartments will be a permanent supportive housing complex where families can stabilize their lives through on-site case management, community events, as well as participate in groups and services provided by partner organizations. Gonzaga University and Gonzaga Prep plan to embed long-term student volunteers on-site in a variety of innovative ways.

The location of Gonzaga Family Haven is strategically chosen to complement the investments made by GU to build assets in the Logan Neighborhood. The project is right next to GU and Gonzaga Preparatory School to best leverage the partnerships that have been formed with these institutions to support resident families.

Located near amenities including schools, parks, emergency services, public transportation, grocery stores, healthcare, and childcare; residents of Gonzaga Haven will be well positions for the support they need for success.

The community is fast-tracked and scheduled to open in 2021. In addition to the support of GU and G-Prep, the project was awarded $3 million in Housing Trust Fund dollars and is being supported by a $5 million grant awarded to Catholic Charities by Amazon CEO and Founder Jeff Bezos’ Day One Foundation.

The result of the combined effort will be primarily seen in a community of healthy, happy, well-educated children with a brighter future.

On-site Social Services

CCEW and GU’s Center for Community Engagement will provide a full range of supportive services for residents of the community including:

  • Peer support relationships

  • Adult education/employment readiness

  • Personal health and wellness classes

  • Case management

  • Health and substance abuse counseling/treatment

  • Access to primary health care

  • Food preparation and nutrition classes

  • Multi-modal transportation systems

The strategies of Gonzaga University’s Place-Based initiative serve as guiding principles for the project’s design, operations and resident support. This will bring GU students together with families with histories of complex trauma for their mutual benefit. Residents will have opportunity to change their lives. Students will engage with people from diverse backgrounds and apply their classroom knowledge in a meaningful, real-world setting. The results are students more prepared to address real challenges and families breaking the cycle of poverty.

Community Impact

Gonzaga Haven will change the lives of families who have experienced the trauma of homelessness and family separation. Through a unique partnership with Gonzaga University, Gonzaga Preparatory School, St. Aloysius Parish, Head Start, Spokane Housing Authority and many others, we will provide families with a safe place to live and access to services that help them make lasting improvements to their wellness and stability. Our goal is to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty for our residents and their families. Through efforts of these partners families will have access to childcare, primary healthcare, ongoing adult education, before and after school services, tutoring, recreational activities, scholarships for continuing education, mentoring and many other life-changing supports.
