Walla Walla Youth Action Board

Our group YAB (Youth Action Board) is made up of young people aged 12-24 who have been homeless and want to help others. We work together to make decisions about services and policies for homeless youth. The board is driven by youth and young adults (YYA), giving us a chance to speak out on issues that affect our lives, like access to shelter, housing, food, education, mental health services, and job training. We take on leadership roles, decide how resources are used, design programs, and push for policy changes that benefit homeless youth.

We work with service providers and advocacy groups to improve our communities. This helps us influence local and regional efforts to address homelessness. Being part of YAB helps us develop important skills like leadership, advocacy, communication, and organization. Our voices are central to conversations about homelessness, ensuring our needs and solutions are heard. This involvement can lead to better housing options, improved mental health services, and policies that prevent youth homelessness. By participating, we help create or improve programs and services like emergency housing, transitional housing, and educational opportunities for homeless or at-risk youth.

Additionally, our YAB created the Spark idea and resources within, further demonstrating our commitment to innovative solutions and support for homeless youth.

In response to the question, "What things do you like about The Spark," the youth provided these quotes:

"The usability of the showers and laundry"

"I love all the art on the walls. The Spark feels really home-y and comfy. Great for relaxing and taking a mental breath of relief."

"It's very welcoming, very bright, full of colors."

"I like that there's a whole place for youth to come for resources or even just a place to hangout."

"I like the atmosphere here. Also, the art materials are nice."

"It feels very homey and comfortable."

"Showers, laundry, safe space.
