Under the soft, warm light of the dining room at the Convent of the Holy Names, families from St. Margaret’s Shelter, CAPA and Rising Strong gathered for a Thanksgiving feast. Holiday music and fall centerpieces contributed to the festive atmosphere, which was completed by the trays of turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes piled high.

In one corner, the kids’ table occupied the younger dinner guests, who drew pictures, colored turkeys and played Thanksgiving bingo. The youngest ones were bounced on laps and crawled after each other on play mats.

The celebration was a well-deserved night of relaxation for families who have worked hard to build stable lives. Catholic Charities is grateful for what these families have achieved. Families living at St. Margaret’s have found a pathway to stability. Parents enrolled in CAPA have developed healthy bonds with their children. Rising Strong families are celebrating the holiday together, well on their way to recovery from addiction and trauma.

A large supporting cast from our community made the evening possible. Sodexo from Whitworth University prepared the meal. Volunteers from Kiwanis and Assumption Parish served food and bussed plates. Members of Jesuit Volunteer Corps and Catholic Charities Service Crew held babies and played games with children. Donors supplied plush toys and door prizes for a raffle.

The Family Thanksgiving Dinner illustrated beautifully how families can thrive when our community comes together to remove the barriers set before them. To our volunteers and donors, our business and community partners, we are grateful for you.

Have a happy Thanksgiving.
