This Week God Brought Us... Erma

This week God brought us…”Erma.” At 93, she speaks slowly and purposefully. She lives with her son in a home infested with black mold. It’s so bad that the City has intervened and Erma and her son will have to find another place to live. Our staff sat patiently with her in the lobby to help her complete an application for our senior housing properties. When the application asked how many states she had lived in, there wasn’t enough space to list them all, as her father had been in the military and they had moved often. When the application asked for her racial identity, she chuckled that she hates answering that question because her family history includes almost all racial groups. She spoke of her decades of employment with Kaiser and we introduced her to one of our staff who had also worked for Kaiser so they could share stories. We got the sense that Erma had “seen it all” in her long life and she was taking this latest challenge in stride.

Erma is one more of God’s messengers at our door, asking to be seen and heard.
